BETTER THAN YOUR BEST by Becky

BECKY is one of my friends...A FRIEND FOR ALL SEASONS OF MY LIFE!

When I was so down because of Biloi's condition, Becky was always there to give moral support. With her deep concern for my son, she helped me raised financial assistance by sending email to her friends. I understand that while others who received said email were not able to respond thru financial matter, I do believed that their prayers were more than enough for us to be grateful. Atty. Cora Alday, one of her best friend who was also a good friend of mine but unfortunately a breast cancer patient based in Canada has deposited more than P5,000.00 to my DBP account which really helped us defray our daily expenses while in Manila for my son's hospitalization. I owe a lifetime debt of gratitude to Cora and with God's blessings, she is recovering and even back to work again.

Below is Becky's email entitled "Better Than Your Best".

To my dear Friends,

Greetings for a BLESSED DAY. I hope you read through this letter which I consider so far to be the most important piece I have written in my life. I have not done this before. I just heard and read stories like this. And now I’m faced with a Christian responsibility of doing this and reaching out to you.

It's about Roi B. Dolot, fondly called “Biloi” by his family and friends. Biloi is a ten-year old boy born on February 15, 1997 at his hometown Tolosa, Leyte. But unlike other boys of his age, he can not do normal activities like running or just merely playing in the yard, for he gets easily tired. As you can see from his pictures below, he is suffering from a congenital heart problem (Severe Pulmonary Valve Stenosis) which needs to be operated on as soon as possible. The ailment was diagnosed when he was still 4 months old. However, due to financial constraints, he remains untreated todate. His fingertips are clubbing or in simple terms have blown to disproportionate size and dons a violet color as well as his lips. His skin, covering his frail body, had become so pale, a manifestation of inadequate oxygen getting into his system, as the hole in the heart’s aorta is so small that enough blood couldn't get through it. Recently, he was hospitalized due to hemoptysis, causing him to vomit blood from his heart. He is weaken by the simple fact that he couldn’t breathe normally. In the attached diagnosis made lately by a cardio-pediatrician from the Philippine Heart Center, an operation to correct the heart anatomy is urgently needed, costing P360,000.00, or roughly $8,000.00. The expenses is way beyond what the family could afford. The father, Rolando Dolot, is a lowly-paid policeman of the Philippine National Police . They have four children to raise in a far-flung barangay of Tolosa, Leyte. Both of them belong to poor families with no relatives to help them financially.

Biloi is a very intelligent pupil of Burak Elementary School, Tolosa, Leyte. A consistent honor pupil, he is supposed to be in Grade 5 this school year but his health already fails him, thus he needs to stop schooling for a while. Previously, a pedicab (bicycle with a side cart) brings Biloi back and forth to school and somebody else has to carry his school bag for him. His teachers are so proud of him as he is the most patient and helpful child in the class. Biloi dreams of becoming a very good architect someday so he could help rebuild their dilapidated church. He always reminds Nanay Dalyn to be patient with his illness as he still wants to accomplish many things to help people. Together with Nanay Dalyn, he lifts up this dream through his nightly prayer of the Holy Rosary. He doesn't want to be a burden to his parents and siblings as he performs minimal tasks at home, like simply watching over his toddler sister. It breaks my heart that a boy like him who suffers from a heart ailment has indeed a golden heart to share to loved ones and friends.

Let us not deny Biloi a piece of our hearts. Any amount of money to save the life of this boy will truly be appreciated. A prayer brigade is most welcome as we continue to hope for miracles. As somebody said, miracles is not the suspension of a natural law, it is, over and above, the operationalization of a divine law.

What is a $100 worth to most of us? It could mean a a brand new bag, a sumptous lunch, new accessories, or just our necessary routinary expenses like to pay our bills. Nothing that threatens our life if for just one time we forego meeting this expenses but instead help a boy reach his dreams and fulfill a mission that he feels he needs to accomplish in his lifetime.

There's a story of a man who is going away but is so reluctant to leave his daughter whom he rejoice at, being in her maternal way, but at the same time is having a marital problem. He asked God to watch over his daughter and protect her from harm. With all his trust in the Lord, he also asked a friend to call and visit her daughter everytime he has a chance. That comforted and pacified him to proceed to his journey. He asked his friend why was that so, is it a manifestation that he didn't have enough trust in the Lord? His friend's answer was, "No, it's just how the Body of Christ works. God created man in His image so we may accomplish things jointly with him."

Let's rejoice with the thought that we are given an opportunity to build our place in Heaven through a charitable act like this as it came our way. Please have the heart to answer to this call of help for Biloi as he prays so hard for you to be an angel to him. And let's ask God's gift of courage for us to be able to ask friends and relatives who may be willing to help Biloi in his need right now.
